Archives in Europe
Yerusha, an initiative of the Rothschild Foundation (Hanadiv) Europe, aims to collect and encourage surveys of Jewish documentary heritage in Europe.
As scholars and researchers will attest, countless pages in thousands of files and collections held in archives across Europe bear witness to the variety and importance of Jewish life on this continent. However, their use is limited by inadequate cataloguing and a lack of contextualisation. The vision of Yerusha is to bring as many of these valuable primary sources to light as possible, connecting them across national boundaries and discovering new, relevant documents.
Yerusha will eventually be an online portal to aggregate the results of already completed surveys. Grants will also be available for survey work to be carried out in currently underrepresented regions.
This website marks the first stage of the Yerusha portal and is designed to indicate the wealth and breadth of documentary sources available on Jewish European history. Please browse through the list of archives below, enter key terms into the search bar, or use the map to search by geographical location.
If you represent an archive or collection with holdings pertinent to Jewish history, please take a moment to complete our online survey in order to be listed on this initial website and to continue to receive information about the Yerusha portal and grant programme.
